Cylinder mowing. The perfect finish for a premium lawn.

A cylinder mower cuts like scissors rather than a blade, so couch and other fine lawns can be kept lower and come up tighter, greener and striped.

The basics

What is cylinder mowing?

A cylinder mower, also called a reel mower, has a set of spiral blades that spin against a fixed bottom blade. It cuts the grass like a pair of scissors. A standard rotary mower uses one spinning blade that tears the grass off instead.

That clean scissor cut is why bowling greens, golf greens and show lawns are cut with cylinder mowers. The grass heals faster, stays greener at the tips and can be kept much lower. The roller on the back also lays the grass down in alternating directions, which gives the classic striped look.

Cylinder mowing suits fine-leaf lawns such as couch, which are common across Mandurah and the Peel. It works best on a lawn that is fairly level and mown often.

How it works

How cylinder mowing is done

From the first look at your yard to leaving the place tidy, step by step.

  1. 1

    Check the lawn

Cylinder mowing needs a fine-leaf lawn and a reasonably even surface, so the lawn is checked first.

  2. 2

    Set a low, even height

The cutting height is set low to suit the lawn and the time of year.

  3. 3

    Mow in straight passes

The lawn is mown in straight lines, alternating direction, to create the striped finish.

  4. 4

    Edge and clean up

Edges are trimmed and clippings cleared from paths and driveways.

Why it is worth it

The benefits of cylinder mowing

  • A premium finish

A tight, low, striped lawn that looks like a bowling green.

  • Healthier grass

A clean cut instead of a tear means less browning at the tips and faster recovery.

  • A thicker lawn

Mowing low and often encourages couch to grow sideways and fill in.

What is the difference between cylinder and rotary mowing?

A cylinder mower cuts like scissors with a spinning reel against a fixed blade. A rotary mower uses one fast-spinning blade that tears the grass. Cylinder mowing gives a cleaner, lower cut and the striped finish.

Is my lawn suitable for cylinder mowing?

Fine-leaf lawns like couch suit it best. Thick-leaf lawns such as buffalo, and very bumpy lawns, are usually better with a rotary mower. Call Simon and describe your lawn if you are not sure.

How often does a cylinder-mown lawn need cutting?

Because it is kept low, it needs cutting more often than a standard lawn, especially in summer. Weekly is common in the warmer months.
